How is Asian wasp sting treated?

Asian wasp sting is an issue that needs to be addressed carefully. In most cases, it does not have serious consequences, but can lead to death in certain situations.

The Asian wasp was detected in Europe in 2004. Its name indicates that it comes from Southeast Asia, but is also known as the yellow-footed wasp. It spread to other countries on the Asian continent and reached Spain in 2010. According to recent reports, it appears to have reached the United States.

The Asian wasp sting inoculates more venom than the sting of an ordinary wasp. The evolution of the episode will depend on the person attacked. If you are allergic to this insect, the reaction could be severe.

The dangers of the Asian wasp sting

It is important to note that the wasp sting of the Asian wasp leads to death in only 0.08% of cases. Obviously, this mortality rate is very low. But in all cases it produces a more painful reaction than other wasp stings. Underlying this phenomenon is the fact that the Asian wasp is larger and has more venom.

The Asian wasp, whose scientific name is Vespa velutina , is an insect that can measure up to 3.47 cm. Its characteristic features are the size and black color of the body, which distinguish it from the European wasps. Unlike bees, wasps can sting several times.

The main danger associated with Asian wasp stings is that it can cause an allergic immune system reaction. The problem is that, in most cases, we cannot know whether or not this type of reaction will occur in a particular patient. There are no tests to predict this allergy.

The effects of the Asian wasp sting

Initially, the Asian wasp sting produces a sharp pain, like when you prick yourself with a thick needle. The patient may experience intense itching, similar to that caused by burns. Then, a large portion of the skin will become inflamed and the pain will persist for an average of 24 hours.

A major danger is that Asian wasps can attack sensitive regions, such as the mucous membranes of the mouth, eyes or nose. At the same time, remember that this insect releases a pheromone through its needle, which encourages the rest of the hive to attack.

If an allergic reaction occurs, there is a risk of anaphylactic shock 30-60 minutes after the sting. This reaction has four degrees:

  • Grade I: widespread hives, itching, anxiety and discomfort;
  • Grade II: inflammation of the mucous membranes, chest pressure, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and dizziness;
  • Grade III: difficulty breathing, swallowing and emitting sounds, confusion and a feeling of imminent death;
  • Grade IV: all of the above symptoms, plus hypotension, collapse, incontinence, skin bruising and loss of consciousness.

Measures to treat Asian wasp stings

Asian wasps attack only when they feel threatened. So be careful not to approach their hive. Also, do not try to kill or harm them if they occur. It is important to be very careful when exploring green spaces or those where there is wood. The best way to avoid such problems is to prevent them.

If an Asian wasp stings you, we advise you to apply a cold compress on the targeted region. This trick will help you reduce inflammation and pain. You can also apply vinegar compresses to get the same effect. If the discomfort is very severe, apply a corticosteroid cream and take an oral antihistamine. Oral corticosteroids may also be used if needed.

The allergic reaction caused by the Asian wasp sting is a medical emergency that needs to be treated as soon as possible. If you have a history of this type of allergy, do not postpone the moment and go to the hospital. Do the same when you detect a sudden reaction. Although only 3% of the general population is allergic to Asian wasp stings, you have no way of knowing whether or not you are part of this group.
